Fishing boat on the Loch
Local Produce
"Where only the best will do..."

Like any island community there is always a strong emphasis on self-sufficiency. Here on the Isle of Skye we are extraordinarily fortunate in having access to an abundance of sea food and at Greshornish we are even more fortunate to have Gavin's fishing boat working from our jetty. Every day, throughout the season, Gavin heads out into The Minch and returns to provide our guests with the freshest possible catch.

Most of our fruit, vegetables and salad requirements are now obtained locally, from crofters and other island producers, along with eggs, chocolates, soap and a number of other items. Perforce much of our meat; beef, lamb, venison and our cheeses are a little more widely sourced, although with Stornoway black pudding and so many other island cheeses to choose from, we do not need to travel far! Remember, there is no Tesco, Waitrose, or M&S on Skye. yet!

Although it is fashionable for guests to be increasingly knowledgeable and interested in the sourcing of local food, few really appreciate the complexities of local supply which provides the livelihood to many of the islanders. It is only by supporting such producers that the local economy can survive and we can all continue to live and work in these wonderful surroundings.

In return, we were grateful to have been a recipient of the Hotel and Restaurant Award 2008, as voted for by the producers of Skye and Lochalsh Food Link CIC, for showing an outstanding commitment to the use and promotion of local produce.
