Welcome
To Greshornish House, a very special place on the Isle of Skye - more a home
from home than a hotel - an ideal place to unwind as
you please and to enjoy the peace, tranquillity and
gentle pace of island life.
Greshornish
House, on a secluded loch-side site, is surrounded
by 10 acres of its own gardens and wooded grounds amongst
the spectacular scenery between Portree and Dunvegan
Castle. Dr Johnson, travelling through Skye in 1773,
did not deem the house, which dates from c.1740, suitable
accommodation. But how things have changed! In the mid-19th
century, Greshornish was the home of Kenneth Macleod,
a wealthy and influential landlord who did much to improve
its comfort. The house was fondly remembered a century
later by Otta Swire as, "a typical Skye manor house:
low and white, well guarded from storms by a belt of
thick trees, its front door is always open as is the
hospitable tradition of the island, ... and the view
from its windows are unsurpassed. It is also properly
furnished with a haunted room and a ghost".
Today, Greshornish
House is a happy and comfortable home offering excellent food and an
ideal place from which to explore the whole island.
A wise man
once said: "Skye is not a place, but an intoxication". |
